How do you locate your main water line?
The main water line will be near the water meter and is typically found in your basement,
crawl space, or near the foundation where the water service line enters your home. It is often accompanied by a shut-off valve.
- Key points to note:
The main water line is usually near the water meter, typically found near the front of your property, often under a metal cover in the ground. - If the main water line isn’t near the water meter, check your basement, crawl space, or where the water service line enters your house.
- Look for a visible pipe with a shut-off valve near the water meter.
Contact your local utility company for assistance if you cannot locate the main water line.
How do you identify your pipe size to select the correct valve control size?
Your pressure-reducing or shutoff valve may be marked with the pipe size. You can also measure the circumference of the pipe using tailor’s tape or a string.
Key points to note:
- Look for markings: Many plastic pipes will have the size printed directly on the
side. - Measure with a string: Wrap a string around the pipe, measure the string length,
then divide by pi (3.14) to get the diameter. - Check valves: The size of a valve connected to the pipe often indicates the pipe size.
- Conversion chart: Once you have the pipe’s diameter, use a conversion chart to find the nominal pipe size.
